WASHINGTON, DC, UNITED STATES, September 10, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- NeighborWorks® America is awarding $1.8 million in Portfolio Strengthening Grants to 15 network organizations working to help preserve affordable rental homes and improve multifamily housing portfolios across the United States.

Now in its 22nd round, the Portfolio Strengthening Grants program is the largest supplemental funding resource NeighborWorks America provides to its national network. Since the program launched in 2003, NeighborWorks America has awarded more than $28 million to more than 100 network organizations, helping them make strategic investments that strengthen affordable multifamily properties and support their long-term financial sustainability. Investing in the preservation of existing affordable rental properties is a critical component in ensuring communities have sufficient well-maintained housing options that are affordable to working families across the country.

"Our network organizations are the stewards of affordable housing in the places they call home," said NeighborWorks America President & CEO Marietta Rodriguez. "These grants give NeighborWorks network organizations flexible capital to strengthen properties, address operating challenges, and keep affordable homes available to residents for the long term."

Portfolio Strengthening Grants provide funding to help network organizations implement portfolio strategies that reduce risk and increase opportunities for sustainability and affordability. Recipients typically use the funds to reduce debt, lower operating and utility costs, complete property dispositions, or upgrade physical plants to improve marketability and operational efficiency. Each award also benefits the parent organization by reducing overall portfolio risk.

To qualify for funding, organizations complete an intensive portfolio clinic and develop a three-year strategy identifying opportunities to improve property and portfolio performance. NeighborWorks America staff also provide individualized technical assistance to help organizations refine their strategies before applying for funding.

These grant funds follow an investment of over $80 million in flexible grants to members of the NeighborWorks network so far in Fiscal Year 2026.
